GARY HUNT’S US 131 RACER OF THE WEEK PRESENTED BY AEROQUIP
MATT LUTTRELL MAKING THE MOST OF HIS ‘ROAD TRIPS’
Some oval racers tow a couple miles to race for 150. Drag racer Matt Luttrell, owner of The Speed Shop, the popular Ypsilanti source for all things high-performance, tows his trusty 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo almost 150 miles one way to race for less than three
Last Sunday, the Milan resident stretched the competitive distance about as far as he could, winning 10 rounds of quarter mile racing in the Lane Automotive Bracket Series to earn Gary Hunt’s endorsement as US 131 Motorsports Park’s Racer of the Week.
Luttrell’s inconspicuous, but deadly-consistent gray Chevrolet reached the semifinals in the Street class, keeping him in first place in points just ahead of Sunday race winner Ron Hager
Significantly, he also drove to runner-up honors in Modified and, as a result, moved to within 14 points of a Top 20 berth that ultimately could put him on the US 131 bracket finals team in two different classes.
Congratulations, Matt, from Gary Hunt and everyone else at US 131 Motorsports Park.
ABOUT GARY HUNT
Gary Hunt is in his ninth season as the track announcer at US 131 Motorsports Park, a track on which he used to race in the brackets and Stock Eliminator. His experience as a race car driver of some repute (he won seven points championships) has served him well behind the mike and while he often misses the thrill of competition, his “desk job” is not without its benefits. “It’s given me the best seat in the house, which is always climate controlled,” he said. “I never break any parts, don’t have to wait in line and I leave with a little bit of money every week.”
