TAYLOR UPSETS SNIDER FOR PRO EXTREME TITLE AT US 131

Strickland, Cox, al-Saber, Pluchino Also Score in Third Annual PDRA Summer Drags

MARTIN, Mich. – Texan Frankie Taylor used his starting line skills to turn back the two biggest names in Pro Extreme drag racing Saturday and win the third annual PDRA Summer Drags at US 131 Motorsports Park.

His win over No. 1 qualifier Brandon Snider in the final round was a virtual dead heat.  Taylor’s .010 reaction time gave him a .037 of a second advantage at the start.  Snider’s 3.540 second track time gave him a .037 of a second performance advantage.  It took the electronic timers to make the call.

In the semifinals, Taylor’s .018 reaction time got his 2005 Corvette to the finish ahead of reigning series champion Jason Scruggs’ 1969 Camaro which, like Snider’s Chevy in the final, was quicker on the track but victimized at the start.  It was a sweet, sweet win for Taylor who has been among the performance leaders on the circuit but who, until Saturday hadn’t won a PDRA race.

Other winners included Jay Cox of Smithfield, N.C., who won Pro Nitrous for the second straight event; Mashal al-Saber, who became the first Kuwaiti national to win a PDRA race as the Pro Extreme Motorcycle champ, John Pluchino of Commack, N.Y., who won his second Extreme Pro Stock title; and John Strickland of Hamels, N.C., who won Pro Boost after teammate Kevin Rivenbark was upset in the semifinals.

It was an all-around bad day for defending champions.

Pat Stoken, the Eureka, Mont., resident who last year became the first Pro Nitrous driver to break the 3.70 barrier en route to the winners’ circle, didn’t make it out of round one.  Neither did defending Pro Extreme Motorcycle champion Chris Garner-Jones of Harvest, Ala.  Defending Top Dragster champ Joe Hessling of Toledo, Ohio, didn’t qualify.  Neither did Top Sportsman champ Tim Lawrence of Princeton, West, Va., although he did race in the first round as an alternate. 

For the second straight race, Cox beat Steve “Stevie Fast” Jackson of Evns, Ga., in the final round, making one of the series top black drivers a runner-up for the fifth time in his career without a win.  Cox also dispatched the strongest female threat when he used a starting line edge to beat Lizzy Musi of Mooresville, N.C., in the semifinals. 

The No. 1 qualifier in Pro Boost, Rivenbark’s three-race winning streak ended in surprising fashion in the second round when his Galot Motorsports Corvette made its slowest run of the weekend against Gary White’s Toyota which made an impressive PDRA debut only to fall victim to a dead battery which left it sitting at the starting line while Strickland drove away for the final round win.

Al-Saber, racing 7,000 miles from home in Kuwait City, saved his best run for the final but didn’t need it when top qualifier and two-time PDRA champ Eric McKinney fouled out by .007 of a second.

Mick Snyder of Demotte, Ind., who won Pro Extreme at Rockingham in 2014, moved down in classification at US 131 to win for the first time in Top Sportsman. He beat veteran Cheyenne Stanley of Cynthiana, Ky., in the final round, thereby becoming the only Top Sportsman driver other than the late Ronnie Davis to win a PDRA race from the No. 1 qualifying spot.

The Top Dragster title went to Craig Sullivan of Avon, Ind., who threw up a .020 package to turn back Chaz Silance of Jacksonville, N.C., in the final round.
