Larsen, Moller Share Jet Car Title in US 131’s Annual Northern Nationals

Veteran Pat Dakin twice beat track record-holder Dom Lagana to claim the Top Fuel championship and Belleville’s Tim Timoszyk drove the “Detroit Tiger” 1980 Chevy Monza to the Nostalgia Alcohol Funny Car title in the wrap-up to Saturday’s annual Northern Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park.

Dakin, a veteran of the NHRA pro tour who has finished as high as No. 2 in Top Fuel points, drove his Dayton, Ohio-based Commercial Metal Specialties dragster to quick time and top speed of the event (4.515 seconds at 316.01 miles per hour on the full quarter mile course) while twice dispatching Lagana and his “Nitro Ninja” entry.

Three-time NHRA World Champion Larry Dixon also won both of his Top Fuel races but couldn’t match Dakin’s numbers and had to settle for second place.

For Timoszyk, a tech school instructor in Manchester, it was his second major win of the year at US 131.  He also prevailed in the Night of Thunder portion of the track’s annual Super Chevy Show.

John Lawson of Joliet, Ill., and Mike McIntire Jr. of Mentor, Ohio were winners in the Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car portion of a diverse program that also included the Larsen Motorsports jet dragsters, a triple-engine jet truck, the wheelstanding PT Cruiser of “Nitro Mike” Kunz and two rounds of racing in the Lane Automotive Bracket Series.

In the jet dragster division, two-time IHRA jet champion Elaine Larsen and one of her protégés, 24-year-old Kat Moller, swept their matches although the 51-year-old Larsen was pushed to the limit by veteran Dewayne Hill in the second round.
